My food storage

With all the items you may have stored for your kitchen needs, space may be at a premium. Even if you don’t prepare the majority of your own meals, the amount of kitchen related materials that might require storage space could be daunting and can fill up your available storage areas quickly. This can certainly be the case in a large kitchen with plenty of shelving and cabinets, let alone in a small kitchen without much-needed storage space. No matter the size of your kitchen, you may still be searching for ideas on how to maximize the kitchen space you do have, so here are a few tips that could help you make the most of your storage spots.

Inventory Rotation
One way of increasing your available storage space is through reducing the number of items taking up space. When it comes to the amount of food sopping up valuable storage room, doing an inventory of items to ensure you aren’t overloaded on certain things or buying too many bulky foods can help open up space when it’s at a premium. Ensuring that you are using items and that they aren’t being forgotten about in unseen nooks and crannies and that you are getting rid of old or expired foods can also help you make better use of your storage space.

Tupper Temptation
Plastic food storage bins can be a great way to make food last longer and make efficient use of leftovers. These same containers can take up a lot of space if not stored properly though. Ensuring that when such containers are empty that they are stacked and stored neatly can keep them from putting a drain on your available storage space.

Wall & Ceiling Space
From hooks and hangers to racks and bookshelves, maximizing wall and ceiling space can be key to effective kitchen storage. A ceiling rack can be great for decluttering pots and pans and freeing up valuable cabinet space. Making use of containers and racks can help keep smaller items organized and reduce clutter. A bookshelf or a shelf running along the wall near the top of the ceiling can allow you to place cookbooks and seldom used items up and out of the way.

Mobile Island
If your kitchen is devoid of storage or counter space, you might want to consider a mobile island. Such a device can be rolled into place where needed during times in which you are working in the kitchen, and then removed when you’re finished. It can be a great addition for chopping, measuring, laying out your cook books, and conducting other meal preparation activities. Ensuring the island comes with lockable wheels can deduce the chance of mishaps.

Conclusion
Keeping your kitchen organized can be a great way to make efficient use of your storage space, and making efficient use of your storage space can be a great way to keep your kitchen organized. With a few well-placed adjustments, you can recognize significant expansion of your kitchen’s storage capacity and increase your ability to function in, utilize, and appreciate your kitchen.

Reuse: Old textiles and Curtains

Living Room

My living room couches  are made of a material that imitates leather but it isn’t leather. After 16 years and two children in the house the material is ripping off and there is no way I can fix it myself. I know that I need new sofas but right now I can’t afford them.

I’ve been looking for cheap sofa covers but until today I only had found chair slipcovers. Today I went to a store where there are these beautiful sofa covers but when I looked at the price, well, they are not cheap at all. The money they cost me I would be able to buy some cheap sofas.

I’m trying to find other options, green ones if possible. I’m going to look for something on my mother’s attic. She has a lot of textiles like curtains, with several sizes and I will try to reuse something that it’s still in good conditions and that matches my living room decoration.

In the 21st Century there is a lot of hype surrounding protecting the environment. Not only is being eco-friendly beneficial for the environment, going green is beneficial to your wallet. Even the simplest changes in your home can make a huge difference for the world and your wallet. Follow these five simple steps for a great way to start your eco-friendly lifestyle:

Lighting Around Your Home
Take a look around your home at your lighting, swapping old bulbs for more efficient options. There are a number of eco-friendly options available that use up to 75% less energy than conventional bulbs and have a lifespan that is 10 times longer. Although such bulbs cost more upfront, the overall savings that can be made are worth shelling out for.

Heating Your Home
Heating is a major outlay when it comes to energy expenditure. By adjusting your thermostat just two degrees can make a huge difference. If you wear appropriate seasonal clothing, the few degrees change in temperature will go unnoticed. Monitoring your heating is an easy and fast way to help reduce your energy costs each month, helping the environment at the same time.

Using Your Washing Machine
Your washing machine is responsible for around 10% of the overall energy usage in your home. If possible, choose to use cold water cycles as this helps to keep the cost down. Avoid several small loads and choose one day a week when you can wash a dark load and another day when you wash all your lights. If you’re looking to purchase new machines this year, try and purchase machines that have a top load.

Unplug Items That Are Not Being Used
A simple and effective way to save energy is to unplug items that are not being used. Look around your home for small items that are sitting idle such as computers or mobile phone chargers that are not constantly being used. You will soon realise how much of difference unplugging these items will have on your monthly electricity bill.

Cheap Electricity Suppliers
Some cheap electricity suppliers have a number of eco-friendly initiatives that come as part of their green energy packages. These include providing energy efficient ways of giving you your gas or electricity, renewable energy sources and offering insulation for your home.

Reusing Simple Items into Useful Products

Lately I have been reusing some “trash”. No, I don’t mean “trash” but what we usually put in the eco-bin.

»» For instance: I have a yogurt maker machine with seven glasses. I can only make seven yogurts at a time and to make more yogurts I have to wait until we eat the last one to have seven containers again. Well, that was before I started using baby fruit containers.

My daughter, although six years old, loves baby fruit, the one we buy at the grocery store. The containers are a little smaller than than the original ones of the machine, but this way I’m able to make eight yogurts and I will have fifteen yogurts in the fridge. This way I reuse glass instead of putting it away. Of course I can’t reuse all the containers we buy, some have to go to the glass eco-container to be recycled.

»» The baby fruit containers can also be used to can jam or even used as home decoration. I gather ideas from online sites like Also Home that offer us creative items to decorate our home. For instance using glasses to put candles, use decoupage technique to make beautiful and unique items. Of course that busy moms like myself prefer to buy everything ready and Also Home is a temptation because they have high quality products at low prices.

»» Another things I’m reusing are cereal boxes. We have several box sizes because we buy normal cereals of different sizes (normal, family size), cereal bars, etc. Some boxes I use to put erasers, sharpeners, scissors, glue, etc. I usually cut the carton to the shape I want. I use smaller boxes to put hair pins and other small hair accessories, and I have a box only for combs and brushes.

»» Sausage glass containers usually are reused to put pens and coloring pencils.

»» Old clothes, those already damaged that can’t be used by us or someone else, I cut them in pieces and put them on the cleaning cabinet. We use them to clean the car, to clean the dust, to clean the bathroom, etc..

I’m always looking for an excuse to reuse something. The curious thing is when a friend, specially the little ones, come to my house and say: Look, this is a cereal box, but there are erasers inside it. :) Too funny.

Leave some reusing ideas on the comments area, I will be glad to check them out.

Spending (out of the budget) Money

I hate when I have to spend money out of my established budget. Two weeks ago it was my desktop screen, today it was the kitchen faucet.

Let’s face it, that faucet is the original one, meaning it has 10 years and during those years we never had problems with it. A few weeks ago it started dripping water each time we used it and now it was already pouring water.

My husband just left to go looking for some Moen kitchen faucets at a local store. I hope it’s not very expensive, we have some big expenses in the next couple of weeks.

Greenhouse Gardening: An Alternative Gardening System

One of the things I would like to have on my backyard is a greenhouse. Having plants and vegetables all over the year would be great. With a greenhouse, plants can grow larger and quicker than the ones with common gardening.

Greenhouses help gardeners to grow plants no matter the weather or season of the year. Usually Greenhouses have heating and humidifying systems that help the life plant process. Plants need sunlight and greenhouses should have the ability to provide the necessary solar radiation, not too much, not too less.

Greenhouse kits usually come with all the systems ready to be installed however some gardeners prefer to take of the greenhouse by themselves. They provide water manually as well as electricity when needed. It’s a hobby that keeps gardeners entertained. If possible, install a rainwater system to take advantage of the rain water.

Next to the greenhouse we can put a metal building structure to store the tool used in the greenhouse gardening. If the gardener prefers and has space, he can put a bench inside the greenhouse and store the tools there.

Do you have a greenhouse? How is it installed?

Almost Time to Get my Own Vegetables Into the Kitchen

Carrots

It’s almost time to start collecting my organic vegetables. The culprits and lettuces are already big enough but I’ll have to wait a little more for the carrots.

I had much more to collect if it wasn’t for the neighbor kids that, curious about the vegetables, keep stripping them off the soil to see if they are big enough and then they are useless.

Sometimes I wish I had a driveway alarm that could warn me about the neighbor kids arrival. I would then make no noise and pretend I wasn’t at home.
