It’s amazing the number of giveaways there are around the web. With Twitter, Facebook and Friendfeed who needs a mass notification system to spread the word out. One of the first releases of the year is the movie “Inkheart” adapted from the book of Cornelia Funke also named Inkheart. This is a simple story that attracts both adults and children with a mix of fantasy and reality.

When Mortimer ” Mo” Folchart (Brendan Fraser) reads a book aloud he has the power of bringing to reality the characters of the book and when that happens one person from real world goes to the universe of the book. He does that once and he ends up with the villain Capricorn in the real world and his wife in the book universe. He raises his daughter alone always trying to find the book he has to read to bring back his wife to real world.

Along the way several characters show up and give this movie a light and funny touch that will glue kids and grown-ups to the screen.

19 years ago I was shocked when after a conference I had difficulty in seeing what was around me. One person that attended the conference had to take me home and the next day I had to go to a ophthalmologist. The final diagnosis was myopia. I never noticed and the doctor believed that what caused it to show up so quickly was the exposure to a slide show on the wall during the conference. The light and brightness were the trigger to my myopia to make its appearance, of course it was already there but it was covered.

I started using glasses but two years later I tried contact lens and never wanted glasses again. I only use glasses at night when I’m nearly going to sleep. Fortunately my myopia is benign meaning it won’t get worse and I don’t have to increase the grade of the lens.

Unfortunately for others eye diseases can be very dangerous and unfair. There are diseases like: Glaucoma, Cataracts or Macular Degeneration that can cause a lot of trouble and surgery is the only solution. Treatment for eye diseases and disorders is quite expensive, a lot of people can’t afford it and governments don’t give the proper funds for it. Due to this 300 million people around the world live with blindness and vision impairments.

It’s time to “give a cry for help”. Governments and people in general must be aware that eye sight is not something we can just ignore that’s why there is going to be a World Sight Day 2008 on Thursday 9th October 2008.

Why World Sight Day?

World Sight Day is a global event included in the World Health Organization’s official calendar and held every second Thursday of October. World Sight Day 2008 will focus on the Ageing Eye:

* About 300 million people are living with a serious vision impairment
* 90 % live in developing countries with little chance of proper treatment.
* More than 80 % of the people living with blindness are over 50 years of age
* Yet 75 % of blindness cases are preventable, curable, or treatable. Over 150 million people live with defective eyesight simply because of uncorrected refractive errors.
