Yesterday my son did two check-ups, dentist and vision. I was able both appointments for the same day and one after the other.

We only notice that my son had vision problems when he started first grade at the age of 6. His teacher called me and told me he had some difficulty in reading what was on the blackboard. I was quite surprised because he never showed any signs or complains however the doctor, at the time, told me that it was perfectly normal once the children get used to what they see and think that it’s the normal image. Fortunately it’s nothing serious. He has Astigmatism and Hyperopia but no myopia.

Once the school is about to start I scheduled an appointment to see how his vision is. It is pretty much the same as last year, however new lenses are going to be made because the ones he has are completely damaged with scratches and blurry lenses.

My son asked if he could use Contact lenses but the answer was yes and no. Meaning, he can use lenses but only after he is fourteen years old not now. He really looks handsome without glasses but for now he has to use them.

Dentist appointment was great. A new and young doctor treated my son’s tooth and next week he will be doing a complete teeth cleaning.  For free!! since we were given a dentist check from child health care.

I love free stuff, it help us to have a better life!!

Do you and your kids make regular check-ups?

  1. It is nice when you get both exams done in a day. I just got my 15 year old son contacts and a pair of glasses (just in case he changes his mind). He really enjoys the contacts though.

  2. Good for your kid. I never had regular checkups when I was a child. Me and my mom only go to the doctor if I’m terribly sick or if the school requires me to. I think my parents didn’t feel the need for regular checkups since we were healthy or its just costly.

Sometimes we just let it go. We feel fine and we think we don’t need checkups. I know how it is…

  3. I’ve started using lenses after 18, and I have to say that are very comfortable and easy to maintain.

I started at the age of 22 and never had a single problem with them.

  5. It’s important to be aware of health problems early. To go through health checks at regular intervals in our most honestly and fairly easy these days.

  6. My family was like Jay @ Alaska Yellow Pages, we never had regular check-ups either. Although I did get glasses early (age 10). Problem was getting me to wear them. I was too vain back then! At any rate, good you’re staying on top of this. It’s important.

At first my son was a little reluctant to use the glasses but after realizing that he saw better with them, he got used to them.

  7. How about lasik eye surgery?this is 99 percent effective and safety..why don’t you try it..?

I asked my doctor’s opinion and he told me that once I was not having problems with the contact lenses and once (at the time) I was near the 40′ it was best not doing the surgery.
I confess that I was also a little scare of the surgery. There was a problem last month with a 35 woman that had surgery on both eyes at the same time (should be one at a time) and she got a bacteria and now she’s blind. Well, it was just one case but….

Yes, that’s true. I’m just waiting for school to start to go and do some checkups. Last year I missed them…
