How many devices do you have connected every day in your home? I’m sure you have many. Imagine the energy they consume and the energy you waste during the night when some of them are not in use.

There are some devices we can’t disconnect: the fridge and the freezer are two of them. But there are some devices we leave in stand by that can be disconnected like the DVD, the Samsung HDTV, the DVR, the home theater system, etc.. These devices although spend just a few energy while in stand-by, we can save some money if we disconnect them from the plug every night.

I know it takes some work, especially if you have many devices around the house but at the end of the month is worth the effort.

  1. Seriously, I am sure we waste so much more energy than we imagine by leaving everything in. I guess you usually have to pay the price for convenience.

  2. Apart from saving money this is also good for the environment. We got used to not caring about these things, but small things can make a real big difference.

  8. Wireless devices such as phones and computer routers are becoming very common in homes. There is no on/off switch and they are designed to be left on always but we don’t know what long term effect the radiation might have on our health or the health of our growing children. Unplugging and reconnecting 365 times a year will increase wear and tear and create a need for more frequent maintenance or replacement of outlets and cables or power-packs. This is costly and impacts the environment.

Try installing holiday timers on the outlets so that things can be automatically switched on in the morning and off at night.
