Healthy Recipe: Cherry Pie

We already have cherries being sold all over the place: markets, supermarkets, on the streets, on our way to the coast, etc. Some cherries are just so red and big that we just want to stop, buy and eat them. I usually eat simple cherries but I also like to put them in fruit salad and to decorate desserts.

Today I bring here a classic, an old but always update recipe.

CHERRY PIEcherry-pie

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup sugar (1 1/4 cup if using sour cherries)
  • 4 cups fresh pitted cherries
  • 1/2 tsp. cinnamon
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • pastry for a double crust pie

Directions:

  1. Mix the sugar, cherries, cinnamon and flour together.
  2. Pour mixture into a pastry-lined 9 inch pie pan. Place top crust on pie, cut slits in top to vent and pinch the edges of the crust to flute.
  3. Brush top of crust with milk and sprinkle with sugar.
  4. Bake at 425F for 25 minutes, then reduce heat to 350F and bake for an additional 25 to 30 minutes.

I found this recipe by Donna Diegel at Suite101.

Who said you need Lipovox or other diets, using fresh fruit is always a healthy way to eat and stay fit.

How can you start composting?

25
Tech tipsComputer Tricks

Many people who have gardens at home have no idea that they can avoid chemicals by recycling the organic waste that comes from their gardens. Waste like leaves, grass clippings and weeds can be used to make a rich organic compost instead of polluting landfill.

All the organic waste people sent to the garbage can be an excellent supplement for your garden.  Some people still use the older technique of the compost heap but now there are available in the market composters of several shapes and sizes that match your garden.

Choose the composter you think will be better for the size of the garden you have. Find the right spot for it. Now you have to start to fill it with the organic waste from your garden and kitchen. What can we use to make our compost?

Brown organic waste:

  • old leaves
  • wood sticks
  • dried grass
  • potato skin
  • hay
  • etc.

Green organic waste:

  • fruit and vegetables
  • weeds without seeds
  • flowers
  • fresh grass
  • egg shell (small pieces)
  • etc.

Always alternate a layer of greens with a layer of browns. The top layer should be always a brown one.

If your composter starts smelling or you see a lot of insects when you open it, it means you need to put more browns on top. Mix the organic waste at least once a week to allow venting and water it.

It’s very easy to keep a composter at home and for me it was a surprise to realize the amount of organic waste we produce.

Fruit: Strawberry

strawberries

One of my favorites fruits is strawberries. I usually eat them with sugar and with cream and my daughter follows my taste. My son prefers strawberries with no extra. I love to mix strawberries with jelly and scream and make tasty desserts.

Strawberries are a very easy fruit to grow at home and they contain important nutrients that help in the prevention and fight of certain diseases.

Strawberries are rich in fructose, sucrose, vitamin C, sodium, potassium and calcium. They contain basic mineral, citric and malic acid that help in the iron absorption. They also contain salicylic acid that helps to fight cancer.

Among the benefits of strawberries we have:

  • Reduction of the risks of getting cancer and heart diseases.
  • Tonic
  • Fights arterial pressure, bronchitis, rheumatism, anemia, gout, renal stones, diabetes and intestine worms
  • Leaves are noninflammatory
  • The presence of natural sugar balances the liver, nervous systems as well as endocrine glandes
  • They help to lose weight because they are low in calories

Strawberries are not indicated for people with a very sensitive stomach and for those with skin problems.

So, benefits are many why don’t you start growing strawberries at home like I do?
