Back Pain and Physiotherapy

I’ve been posting less lately due to my back problems. For several months now that I’ve been feeling a lot of pain on my back, specially on the left side of my spine. The pain is similar (at least I think it is) to a stab of a knife. Every time I turn my head left the “knife” stabs causing a lot of pain. Sometimes the pain is continuous no matter I’m moving or quiet. This back pain also causes me neck pain.

First I thought it was a pain caused by stress once my neck was always rigid and aching, but I was wrong. After several months feeling this pain I went to see a doctor and exams showed up a shoulder tendinitis and other problems in the spine. Once a public solution was taking too long and the pain was unbearable I looked for a private physiotherapist once this is the best therapy for this type of pain.

Last week I went to the physiotherapist appointment and I was told that what I have was postural stress due to my 8 hours a day work at a desk. Besides that I have a pinched nerve that is one of the causes of my disability to turn my head left , the feeling of “knife stab” and the numb feeling I have on my left arm and hand.

I have already had six treatment sessions that consist in hot patches, electrotherapy, ultrasounds and massage. So far the results are minimum but noticeable. The big, big problem: I should have never waited eight months to search for professional help for my back pain and now it’s going to take longer to treat it.

Besides this back/shoulder/neck pain I also have, from time to time, sciatic crises that usually just disable me from walking as usual. The pain starts on the lower back, goes to the hip and leg and, I must say, it’s very painful. Right now I’m siting on the floor with the laptop on my bed because if I sit on the bed with the laptop on my lap in a few minutes the pain will start to attack my hip and leg. Maybe because the bed is to hard as the floor, I don’t know, but siting on the bed typing is something I must avoid now.

I’ve been searching the web for back pain related articles and I found some interesting websites as well as Help Videos por people suffering from back pain. Here are some links:

Exercises at your desk for neck pain

A good posture is the key to prevent back pain, believe me, I’m aware of that now.

Sometimes we have to go through pain ourselves to realize that we could have avoided it. A first person testimony is always great to read and I just hope you recover soon and get back to your normal life without pain. Having pain and still work 8 hours a day must be terrible…

Thanks Megan. I always try to put a little of my own experience on the subjects I write about. I know I’m not alone with back pain so if someone reads this post realizes that she/he is not alone too.
