Choosing the Right Engagement Ring for Your Bride to Be

Buying an engagement ring is never an easy thing. You can spend hours, days even, wracked with indecision about buying this token of your love. How do you know if she’ll like it? What type of metal does she like? What sort of cut should you get for the diamond? It would all be much simpler if you could just ask her, but that’s not likely to win you any points.

However, there are a few tips to help you get the best engagement ring for your fiancé. The first step is to educate yourself about diamonds. Now, this doesn’t mean that you need to take a gemological class; it simply means that you need to learn about the 4 C’s. These are Color, Cut, Clarity and Carat. Each of these plays an integral role in the value of the stone, the price you pay for the diamond and how much she’ll like it.

You’ll need to pay special attention to the shape of the diamond. The Princess Cut is the traditional choice for engagement rings, though there are quite a few others available, such as the marquis cut, pear or teardrop shapes, oval cuts and many more. The choice of stone shape should be based on what you know about your significant other, her likes and dislikes and her personal sense of style.

You’ll also need to know about the options for the band. There are several different metals that make wonderful ring bands. Yellow gold is an obvious option, but so is white gold, platinum and even silver. Of all the choices available, white gold and platinum are the two current favorites. White gold has a similar look to platinum, without the high price, of course.

Before you buy, try to “spy” a little if you want to surprise her. Try to find out what she likes. And I mean, really talk to her on the subject, not just assume. Otherwise, 50% chances are she gets a ring she isn’t fond of and you don’t want to see this happening… I’m talking from experience…

Then, do your homework, study a bit on clarity, this might help you save money and not get tricked. More affordable are the so called “eye-clean” diamonds. These are diamonds with inclusions that are not visible to the naked eye. These diamonds are SI or SI2. Thus, (unless your GF is a gemologist :D ), you can save money AND get a really astonishing piece.

Also, make sure you know her measure. This is a tricky one… But then, not to worry too much about that, they can exchange it or make it fit.
