Have a Better Life

A few days ago I wrote about better conditions for sick elderly in need of better living conditions.

Today I was informed that a new center opened in the city. It’s a new and well equipped complex and it seems to have all the necessary conditions to provide a dignified life to the elderly people especially the sick ones with disease like Alzheimer. They have specialized staff, good facilities, good technical conditions and they are using a new assisted living software that basically takes care of all residents. Everything related to management and schedules is controlled through this system.

One day, when my mother isn’t able to take care of my father (who has Alzheimer), this center could be a good option for him, but…but as usual the problem is money. This complex is considered a luxurious complex once is equipped with the latest technology and has a very good staff so the monthly fee is absurd for a normal worker. Rich people yes, they can have a great life when they are old and sick, this is not people that work all their life and receive a retirement monthly payment that barely is enough for the monthly basic bills.

I’ve been a little away from this blog because I’ve been taking care of my daughter who had a surgery to remove her tonsils and adenoids.

The decision for this surgery was taken by two different otorhinolaryngologists. Her X Ray showed extra large adenoids and her tonsils could be seen from an open mouth, and that was the reason of her snoring and sleep apnea. I had this problem with my son almost 6 years ago when he was 3 therefore this was not something new for me.

We checked in the hospital at 8am, at 9am she was in the surgery room and at 9.15am she was in the recovery room. We left the hospital at 6pm. She has to stay at home for 12 days with a special diet. Tomorrow it’s the after-surgery doctor’s appointment.

Usually adenoids are removed when there is sleep apnea in children but tonsils are only removed if the size is over sized. This was what happened to my daughter, her tonsils were too big and were blocking her throat.

After surgery, on the first night I cold tell the difference, no snoring, no sleep agitation, just a calm and relaxed good night sleep. Problem solved.

The most common reason for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy it is to remove enlarged tonsils and adenoids which block a child’s breathing passages. If the tonsils are to large, a child may not eat well, taking only small, soft foods. The child may also have some choking and mouth breathing. Most people are worried about diets and weight loss. I never had that problem in fact I always was underweight. My anxiety and lack of time to eat (my fault of course) are the cause. I’m 38 and menopause is still a few year ahead but an article I read made me think about gaining a few pounds.

Although this is not a general rule, losing weight during menopause is a possibility. Due to the increase of the lose of bone mass, specially at the hip level, the weight might decrease, this is what says a Study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism. The authors of this study mention that even with a hormonal therapy, women are not totally protected against weight lose. The lose of bone mass is also caused by the weight variation women go through when they enter menopause.

If for some a few less pounds is a good thing for others can be a serious problem.
