Conjunctivitis - Symptoms and Prevention

By Laura | Sep 6, 2007
My daughter had a severe conjunctivitis this last days as I wrote on my family blog. Although a highly contagious disease, no one in the house got really sick, I just had a few itching in my eyes but no need for treatment.

Here is some information regarding conjunctivitis:

Infection symptoms:

  • Lacrimal eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Eyelids “glued” specially in the morning
  • Sensibility to the light
  • Seems that we have sand grains inside the eyes
  • Itchy
  • Watery discharge
  • Foggy vision

Avoid contagion:

  • Wash the hands frequently
  • Avoid touching the eyes
  • Do not share towels
  • Don’t use other people cosmetics
  • Don’t share eye medication
  • Don’t use contact lenses during the conjunctivitis
  • Protect the eyes from water with chlorine

Just thought I’d add a little more about the treatment of conjunctivitis. =)

The appropriate treatment depends on the cause of the problem. For the allergic type, cool compresses and artificial tears sometimes relieve discomfort in mild cases. In more severe cases, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications and antihistamines may be used. Some patients with persistent allergic conjunctivitis may also require topical steroid drops. On the other hand, Bacterial conjunctivitis is usually treated with antibiotic eye drops or ointments.
